How does mental health play a role in the process of grooming a victim into sex trafficking?

GROOMING PROCESS:

VULNERABILITY- Traffickers target vicitms with recognizable vulnerabilities such as low self esteem, emotional neediness, history of poverty, family instability, trauma, and more. With obvious vulnerabilities, traffickers are able to gain trust, gain information, and quickly fill a need whether that be emotional or financial. They start with casual conversations that expose needs that need to be filled.

DEPENDENCY- Vulnerability creates a space for dependency. By filling these needs, the trafficker makes the victim dependant on them through buying gifts, providing financial, or emotional support by being a friend or beginning a romantic relaitonship with the victim.

ISOLATION- Dependency creates isolation. A trafficker's goal is isolate their victim from freinds and family. The trafficker will take a major role in the victim's life and cause the victim to believe they have no one to turn to as they are forced into trafficking.

Isolation then allows for the abuse to begin. The trafficker will demand to be repaid for their services. In most cases, sex is demanded as payment.

Prevention must begin with education and conversation.

Parents, it is imperative that we are aware of what our children are encountering on the daily thorugh social media so that we are able to see warning signs and/ or help prevent a dangerous situation. How can we do this and help protect and prevent? We can learn and educate ourselves and have open cponversations with one another about this rising issue.

Here are a few important statistics you need to know about the sexual exploitation that occurs in every town, city, and state.

1. The majority of grooming happens on social media.

2. Porn is the number one contributor to Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking. More than 80 million site visits a day, and over 42 billion site visits a year.

3. Stats from 2019 - Fight the New Drug - Porn Hub had over 110 billions viedos viewed in 2018. Over 5.8 billion hours watched in 2019 / That's equal to 66,500 years of content consumed in 1 year, just on one porn site.

4. There are 1 million registered sex offenders in the US;; There are 19,495 incorporated cieies, town and villages in the US. That's over 50 preadators per city.

5. Research shows that each predator by the time, they are caught have preyed on over 250 victims. That's 12,500 victims per city.

6. Data from 2019 shows that the number one searched tag on porn sites is the tag ""rape""

5. TikTok / Snapchat / Instagram are some of the top social media outlets that predators use to find their victims.
6. The future of Sex Trafficking will be almost all online, in the virtual world.
7. There are about 1 million registered sexual offenders in america, and by the time they are caught the average number of victims they have preyed upon in person or online is 250 global victims per offender.
8. Over 150,000 new sex ads are added to the internet per day
